Hello my lovely people. No matter where you are in this world, i hope life finds you healthy, happy and safe. Today i was reading a very emotional blog post of a blogger colleague i admire. It was about battling a social media depression. Before asking : ”What the hell is that?”, let me tell you, it is real. And since i am emotional myself i felt the urge to create something beautiful. The thoughts that came over me, while reading the post were about the little things in life we miss on. Since we all are very busy people and try to squeeze almost the impossible out of each and every minute…. the term : ” little things in life ” is almost a myth. A non existing superficial concept… which we all have heard of. But sadly very few of us experience it. So i asked myself… what makes people happy?
10 little things in life
A familiar smell – It is true what they say… that a simple smell can transport you trough the years and wake up memories you never knew you had. That is for me when i come to my parents house. There is that familiar smell, after opening the front door… The smell of wood and fresh laundry. And then you know… you are HOME.
Getting inspiration outside – When sitting in front of the computer on your desk… browsing trough the internet, reading articles and doing work, it is simple to loose sight and at some point to get in a real life depression. On these days i love getting outside… where i can observe people. There is nothing more intriguing than that…. Watching people’s interaction with one another, the way the laugh and talk, or even cry… what are they wearing… what perfume they have on… what problems they discuss. That is just fascinating to me, because lets be honest… we are some complicated creatures.
Fresh sheets – Everybody knows the feeling… It is such a pain to change the sheets… But once you do… after a long day of meetings and walking up and down, you come home… You make yourself ready for bed. Wash your face, cleanse and moisturize your skin and jump into that fresh clean bed. You inhale the cotton smell and cannot hide a tiny smile… Sleep tight…
Making someone smile – There is nothing better than that… It doesn’t matter how you achieve it… by telling a silly joke or helping in the right moment of need…. But when that other person turns to you with a big smile, which is only meant for you…. it warms hearts.
Staying home on a rainy day with a cup of tea – does it get any more nostalgic than that? When the sky cracks open and it pours down like it has never rained before… and a lightning strikes… Oh well for me this is the time for a perfect getaway. To recharge and relax and reflect on situations and people… with an herbal tea and thick wool socks.
Top 5 little things in life
Seeing a friend making an entrance onto the Fall of shame ( without hurting themselves of course ) – This one may sound a bit strange or cruel… but come on… as if you wouldn’t laugh. We have all been there…done that.
Smell of coffee in the morning – It is half past 6, you are still in bed swearing to the alarm and the coffee machine is fully charged, loaded and prepared to turn itself on… letting you hear that distant ”roaring” when the black beverage is being squeezed into your mug. And the first scent of coffee is being spread trough the entire house… Daaaaamn.
Receiving a compliment – Compliments are very interesting phenomenon. Imagine you have a new jacket or haircut or a new fragrance. You go out and it does not take long for absolute strangers to notice you and give you a genuine compliment. Such encounters just make my day.
A good laugh – It is well known that laughter has therapeutic properties. But besides that… the moments when you crack up and cannot stop laughing and gasp to breathe… they are the ones that make life worth living. Or am i mistaken?
Being kind to people – That feeling of greeting people with a smile, looking straight in their eyes and receiving the same back… It is just everything.
2 Bonus little things in life for me
Eye contact – I have mentioned that earlier. Looking someone straight in the eyes is something i always do. To me the eyes are the window to the soul and what better way to express emotion, joy or even sadness.
Hearing the right song in the right moment – That one always gives me goosebumps, I wont lie. But it works, it is empowering and you can channel so many emotions in 3 minutes or just a chorus.
okay maybe one last thing…. and then i am finished with the topic
Feeling the sand under my feet – Since i grew up by the sea… i have always felt a special connection to the water and the beach. Feeling the cold but refreshing sand under my feet on a beautiful morning… while staring at the calm and wave-less sea… I would be lying if i deny my own smirk in that very moment, reminiscing of these serene moments.
In conclusion i can only advise each and every one of you my lovely friends… enjoy the moments of now. As I am speaking of that I will meet up with a dear friend of mine in Cologne to enjoy a delightful sunny day and talk about past times and future adventures. Hopefully I could meet you at some point and discuss these same topics over a glass of wine… or Gin.
Stay beautiful and Smile: It confuses people.
